Questions builders ask most

There has been an accident on site. What do I do in the first hour?

If anyone is seriously hurt or in danger, call 999 first and give first aid. Make the area safe and stop the work that caused it, but do not disturb the scene more than you have to. Write down what happened and who saw it, and take photos. Deaths and specified injuries must be reported to HSE under RIDDOR without delay.

An HSE inspector has arrived on site. What do I do?

Stay calm and cooperate. Inspectors can enter a site at any reasonable time without notice. Show them your construction phase plan, RAMS and records, answer honestly and note what they ask for and by when. If you are given a prohibition notice, stop that work straight away.

What CDM documents does a small builder need?

On every job you need a construction phase plan and risk assessments for your work, usually written as RAMS. Depending on the job you may also need COSHH assessments, permits to work, a lifting plan and site induction records. If you work for a principal contractor, they will tell you what they need before you start.

What are my duties as principal contractor?

You plan, manage, monitor and coordinate health and safety during the construction phase. You prepare the construction phase plan, organise cooperation between contractors, make sure every worker gets a suitable site induction, keep unauthorised people off site and provide welfare facilities. You also work with the principal designer and pass on information for the health and safety file.

Which accidents do I have to report under RIDDOR?

Deaths, specified injuries such as most fractures and amputations, injuries that keep a worker off normal duties for more than seven days, and certain dangerous occurrences, such as the collapse of a scaffold more than 5 m high. Deaths and specified injuries must be reported without delay, over-seven-day injuries within 15 days.

When does a project have to be notified to HSE?

When the construction work will last longer than 30 working days with more than 20 workers on site at the same time, or will exceed 500 person days. The client sends the notice on form F10 before work starts. On a domestic job, that duty passes to the contractor or principal contractor.

How often must a scaffold be inspected?

A competent person must inspect it after it is put up and before it is first used, at least every seven days after that, and after anything that could affect its stability, such as high winds. Each inspection must be recorded and the report kept on site.

Do I need an asbestos survey before refurbishment?

If the building was built before 2000 and the work will disturb its fabric, yes. You need a refurbishment and demolition survey of the area where you will work, or of the whole building if it is being demolished. Work must not start until you know where the asbestos is.

How do I get CHAS accreditation as a small builder?

You choose a CHAS membership level, fill in the online health and safety questionnaire and upload your documents: usually your health and safety policy, risk assessments, method statements and evidence of training and insurance. An assessor checks them and may ask you to correct something before you pass. Accreditation is renewed every year.
